  Not an Oprah fan?

  join the club.

  first of all i am in chicago, so we get tons of stories about the woman.

  is she any different from any other wealthy powerful person, probably not, but she certainly is not the golden child she presents herself.. 1) she can be demanding (not any different from many wealthy rich people) and if you do not ask how high when she says jump, you are fired.. 2) she is known to agree to something, disappear for a while and then people get a form letter from "her people" saying that oprah cannot participate in ___[fill in appropriate word here]_____.

  So, ABC t.v. is showing a special w/ how Oprah has raised money for a girls' school in Africa. I don't begrudge them their school. What I would love, would be for people to see Oprah for who she is .... a self absorbed, spoiled t.v. personality.

  A bash Oprah thread on a religious board. OK. I like her topics on ocassion. She has some issues that are interesting to me.

  Really, how many billionaires are not self absorbed and spoiled. Trump?

  I do not care what % of her massive bank roll she gives, it is something, and may make a difference in ONE persons life. I remember Trump gave the subway rescuer $15 or $20k. Not a lot for a billionaire, but it is SOMETHING.

  i thought i'd open a discussion on the mental health condition of most practicing jws.

  and get viewpoints on what kinds of mental health effects the wts.

  may have for most of the people that are practicing witnesses.

  In high school, despite being a pioneer, I said I wanted a big family and giant hose. Naturally, I was called to the elders in a private meeting. I was showing by my attitude that I did not believe that the end was close. I should reach out because the time left is soo short. I said I wanted to raise a family and I would need to support them. I would never be an elder, because I did not want the STRESS. I was labeled as being WEAK becasue of the stress comment. The elders said it was a privellege and no stress was involved. The entire circuit knew about my comment.

  Three of my former friends are now elders. One told me that 80% of his hall was on prozac and the like to cope with depression. Everyone is depressed. One friend stepped down, because of stress and depression. He could not handle work, 3 children and a nagging wife. Now, everyone has children and are trying to buy their 1st home in their 40's. I told one, WOW, why didn't you buy years ago like me. He said he was a pioneer-elder, but now regrets his decision. He wife is now on drugs because of depression because they never planned for retirement or saved cash. The end is / was too close to do that.

  Oh, yes.... On the phone connection to the meeting, I heard a traveling Circuit Overseer give the comment that "We are in the last MINUTES of this old system of things." --Not the last 'days,' but the last minutes.

  That means at least 120 seconds. Wow....that should buy another 5 years...............

  After noticing how other cults religions encourage their parishioneers to be career oriented and educated, it is odd how the JW's want everyone depending on them for EVERYTHING. Now, possibly there is a lack of cash. If everyone is not well paid, there will be less cash infusion into the org. Even the mormons have colleges and are in politics. The witnesses are so far behind.

  No educated / intelligent person will ever be dedicated. They will see through the BS.

  ..find a way to turn in time. They will leave u alone. If you are irregular or inactive, they have to respond, otherwise you are a great ACTIVE publisher. I have not gone in a few months, but my wife turns in time. No one cares.

  I know this is violating the bible principal to turn in time to Brooklyn or you will die, but..................

  After not embracing many of the key practices of the witnesses (since 1995), I find it hard to fit into society in some ways.

  Pre-generation change, I was reading the bible to justify celebrating my sons 3rd b-day. I knew of the common examples cited by the society, but wanted more. After examination I noticed how Job's children appear to have celebrated birthdays. The angels also celebrated Jesus' birth. This was all of the justification I needed. I later found that many witnesses acknowlege the birth of their children with cake and ice cream. They never tell anyone.

  I have found after many years as a witness, it is difficult to acknowlege / participate in common worldly practices. I have always taken my mother out on Mother's Day, but other activities are difficult. Anniversies, birthdays and common celebrations are hard for me to acknowledge. I feel uncomfortable at the company Christmas Party, despite it being merely a dance with music and alcohol. I am desensitized to compassion in some ways. In the org. it was always US (witnesses) vs. Them (bad, evil seeds of Satan that will die in any second). I find myself still lacking natural concern as the typical JW.

  (We (JW's) have the truf, so we are better than those people)

  Do you have similar problems regarding anniversies, birthdays, celebrations, parties?

  I think it isn't any worse than any where else, it's just the hypocrisy of the supposedly clean organization.

  I agree, it is the same everywhere, no different. People have learned to cover it up better. Kinda like when you go to the hospital, most of my friends say christian to prevent an unwanted visit.

  What percentage of JW's think that the end is less than 10 years away? I'd say 5%

  What percentage of JW's think that the end is more than 20 years away?I'd say 90%

  Most think it is coming tomorrow (newbies), or never (old timers).

  Many that were elders when I was a child are mad they are sick and about to die.

  I am also curious, How do you know about the pioneer sister doing it for years and "it being undiscovered?"

  I used too date 3 of them. No activity with me (I was sincere and young), but we remained friends through the years. One has traveled the world going to assemblies, preaching and witness group trips. Now she is over 40 (an old maid in the witness world). Last week she told me while in Europe about smoking pot and other wild activities. Locally, she has a main squeeze who is a MS. One is not a pioneer but again, has a companion at work that she dates regularly and is active with. The other told me of her activities many years ago when I was single, but now is very old and still very single. She mentioned of it happening only twice with others back then, but made a proposition nonetheless. She was the faithful pioneer sister who started prior to 1975.

  While single (prior to marriage) I had the convertible car, on district assemby parts, started pioneering in 11th grade....yada, yada..yada. I made a lot of close friends, some still have trusted me with their secrets. Working the pioneer desk at an assembly as an 18 YO, sisters would offer me the invitation to help them with their time after work. I later found out many of these women were active in a very bad way. Most were DF.

  While in HS I knew the prom was out. Many youths in my hall (4 congs.) went with worldly people and got hotel rooms. Some of the elders children were privately reproved. One elder forgot to take down his son's prom picture from his mantle as he did for (every bookstudy) over 10 months. Some considered it a coming out part never to return to a meeting. One of the latter was arrested during the 1992 LA riots and went to prision...and remains there.

  Again, now as an adult, most couples are discovered after about 2-3 years. Some women that are friends of my wife are sexually active, but felt it was ok, because they married the man. I personally know of about 10 women that were active but married the man.

  Private reproof was also used for favorites and elders children. They would not comment for a few months, but go to the Meeting for Service every weekend, only to make RV's alone, then get everything back after 3-4 months.
